Publish & ShareEmail and Password Protection

Email and Password Protection

You can control who gets access to a published asset by collecting an email address or requiring a password. These settings live in the publishing menu in the asset editor.

From the editor, click Share Externally in the top right, then select Email and Password from the menu.

Email Gating

The Collect Email section controls whether a visitor has to provide an email before the asset loads. You have three options:

  • Do not require an email or password. The asset is open to anyone with the link.
  • Collect email. Visitors enter an email address before the asset unlocks.
  • Restrict access to specific domains or specific users. Only visitors with a matching domain (for example, google.com) or a specific address (for example, henrik@nike.com) can get in. Rules work on an OR basis, so a visitor only needs to match one entry.

Verify Email

With Collect Email enabled, you can turn on Verify Email to confirm the visitor actually controls the address they entered. When this is on, Mutiny sends a link to the submitted address and the visitor must click it before the asset unlocks.

Preview text

The Collect Email settings include a preview of the text that appears on the email collection page the visitor sees. You can edit this to customize the message.

Analytics

A benefit to email gating assets, is that Mutiny will identify the visit with the email the user provided. This can be an easy way to increase visitor de-anonymization, and get a better understanding of who is viewing your assets.

Require Password

Toggle Require Password to lock the asset behind a single password. Enter the password you want to use in the field that appears. Visitors see a password page and must enter the correct password before the asset loads.

Passwords can contain letters, numbers, and special characters, and they are case-sensitive. Choose something secure that you can share with authorized viewers.

The password page also has preview text that you can customize, so visitors see a message that explains why they need the password.

Security considerations

Password protection is a reasonable control for moderately sensitive content, but it is not an advanced security solution. For anything highly sensitive, pair it with Collect Email and Verify Email, or restrict access to specific domains or users.
